Petranek’s Pharmacy has been serving the community since 1872. At Petranek’s, we offer customers all of the same benefits as larger pharmacies by accepting all major insurance companies and Medicare Part D plans. We carry the same variety of prescription and over the counter medications that other pharmacies carry. However, there is one major difference between us and everyone else, we like to do things a little bit differently. We do them better.

First, our level of customer service and commitment to patients is something that we pride ourselves on. It is not uncommon for a patient to walk through the door and be on a first name basis with the pharmacist and staff. Also, we offer a reliable delivery service to all of our patients. If you live in Libertyville, Petranek’s Pharmacy will deliver to you for FREE. To those patients in the rest of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and parts of Minnesota and Michigan, delivery is nine dollars. If you're outside the above mentioned areas we offer UPS shipping. We will always do anything and everything we can to ensure our customers receive the very best care.

Second, Petranek’s Pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy. This means that we have the ability to make up medications into alternate doses that aren’t available commercially, flavor medications so that they taste better, and also make up medications for your furry, four legged companions. That’s right- Petranek’s Pharmacy is also a veterinary pharmacy, filling almost 25% of our prescriptions exclusively for pets. Call and ask us how we can help with any of your prescription needs, whether you want to flavor your child’s medication or feed your pet medicated treats instead of tablets.

Compounding Info

Petranek's Pharmacy, along with being a regular pharmacy, is also proud to be a Compounding Pharmacy. This means that Petranek's has the ability to make up medications that aren't commercially available. The spectrum of compounding is broad, but Petranek's covers almost everything. And, in addition to compounding for people, Petranek's Pharmacy makes up almost 25% of their total medications for pets. You'll find a general description of services we offer below, but please do not hesitate to call us if you would like more information or any questions of yours answered by one of our pharmacists or pharmacy technicians.

In order to maintain a high standard of care and service, we ask for a two day notice on ALL compounded prescriptions.

If your prescription has no refills remaining, or the doctor/veterinarian must be contacted, please notify us of your refill request seven days in advance.

Please note that this does not apply to new medications, which we will expedite and formulate for you as soon as possible.

If you need your prescriptions shipped to you, we can do that.

COMPOUNDS FOR PEOPLE

Compounded medications for people are a common occurrence here at Petranek’s Pharmacy. Our patients range from infants to adults, and we’re always happy to cater to your specific needs. Since all insurance companies and plans are different, we do not submit compounded medications to insurance companies. However, if you call your company and they’re willing to cover your medication, we are more than happy to fill out the proper paperwork for you to submit to them for reimbursement. The main types of compounded medications for people are:

Alternate Doses

If your physician feels that you need to take a specific dose of a medication that isn’t commercially available, this is where Petranek’s comes in. We can make up your medication into capsules with whatever dosage strength you are prescribed.

Flavored Liquids

Used mostly for children, flavored liquid medications are extremely popular. Our flavor options include cherry, banana, vanilla, bubblegum, grape and apple. We will make up your medication in its specific dose and your choice of flavor.

Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy is another very popular compounded drug type. Some drugs need to be taken differently than others, and we are here to make sure that you have a variety of options. We can compound these prescriptions in creams and ointments, in capsules, or in chocolate lozenges.

Newman’s Nipple Ointment

A special recipe that very few pharmacies nationwide have access to, Newman’s Nipple Ointment is made specially for nursing mothers.

Wart Solution

One of Petranek’s Pharmacy’s very own pharmacists created the recipe for 5 FU wart solution. 5 FU is extremely successful in wart removal when over the counter products just aren’t cutting it.

VETERINARY COMPOUNDS

Just like people, pets can get sick too. Petranek’s Pharmacy offers a variety of solutions to all of your pet’s health care issues, whether it’s a short term ailment or a lifelong condition. We have made up medications for a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, birds, turtles, monkeys, horses, tigers and guinea pigs. And, since no two animals are the same, we offer many dosage forms so that you can pick the best option for your specific pet.

Capsules

Almost every drug that we compound at Petranek’s can be made up into a capsule. Our capsules range in size from #4 (the smallest) to #000 (the largest).

Flavored Liquids

For pets who aren’t too keen on taking a capsule, or if you just want to add a little flavor to your pet’s day, flavored liquids are a great alternative. We offer chicken, tuna, beef, apple, grape, liver, oyster and banana flavors.

Chew Treats

Easily the most fun way to dose your pet’s medication is in the form of our medicated chew treats. Most of the medications that we work with can be compounded into chew treats, with a few exceptions. Flavors for these are chicken, tuna, beef, liver and bacon.

Transdermal

Finally, we offer transdermals gel medications for your furry friends. This medication is dosed out onto your finger and simply rubbed into the hairless portion of your pet’s ear and absorbed into the skin.

Petranek's History

Petranek's Pharmacy, originally named Lovell's Pharmacy, was founded by Frank Lovell in 1872. Lovell's Pharmacy was one of the first businesses in downtown Libertyville, Illinois, and has remained in the same location since it's establishment.

After Frank Lovell's passing in 1889, ownership of the pharmacy passed over to Jim Swan. Swan owned and operated Lovell's until his death in 1946, which was when Lou Petranek came to own Lovell's. Lou Petranek decided two years later to rename the pharmacy to Petranek's Pharmacy, and the pharmacy has since kept it's name.

In 1954, Petranek's Pharmacy fell victim to a terrible fire, which left it's doors closed all the way until 1956. After Lou Petranek re-built the pharmacy, he continued to own and operate it until he finally sold it to a private company named Faber Enterprises in 1961. Faber appointed pharmacist Don Murphy to oversee the store.

Then, in 1970, Petranek's Pharmacy resumed private ownership when Faber sold the store to Larry Savitt. Savitt owned Petranek's until 1981 when he sold the store to John Csiha, a pharmacist at Petranek's at the time. John continued to own the store until 2004 when he decided it was time to pass the torch on to Beau Diab, John's newest appointment to the Petranek's Pharmacist staff.

While current owner Beau Diab has updated the interior of Petranek's, including adding a large Community Health and Information Center in the front of the store, some of the original woodwork from the 1956 structure still remains as a reminder to the store's wonderful past. In addition to Petranek's, Beau owns a second independent pharmacy in Mount Prospect, IL, named Keefer's.
